Dear Episcopal Candidates, General Officers, Annual Conferences and General Supporters of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church,
Grace, Mercy, and Peace from God our Father and Our Lord Jesus Christ.
The powerful and profound words shared in the critically acclaimed Broadway Musical Hamilton speak to the magnitude of this moment.
"Let me tell you what I wish I'd known
When I was young and dreamed of glory
You have no control
Who lives, who dies, who tells your story?"
Bishop William Jacobs Walls records this history that signals the start of what is now known as the Midwest Episcopal District. He writes,
“Bishop George Lincoln Blackwell, a university man with a missionary zeal, elected and assigned to the Missouri Conference in 1908, gave a new impulse to our whole work in the West, especially the Midwest, and the Southwest. In one significant event he organized out of this territory, known as the Missouri Conference, three conferences: Michigan, Indiana, and the original Missouri Conferences at Du Quoin, Illinois in 1909.”
